“Every 3 decibels we can get ship noise down means more salmon in [the Southern Resident Killer Whales] bellies.” ~ Dr. Scott Veirs
Our UX design goal is to unearth possible solutions to: How to use hydrophones (under water microphones) to help reduce ship noise?
Shipnoise is an ambitious project addressing one of the top 3 conservation issues for Southern Resident Killer Whales in the Salish Sea: noise from ships, especially commercial tankers, cargo ships, etc, prevents the killer whales from foraging and hunting their preferred meal, chinook salmon. Reducing the decibels in the ocean has an immediate, positive effect on the killer whales and is the primary goal of this project, and combined with reducing organic pollutants and increasing chinook salmon runs, can help ensure the survival of the Southern Resident pods.
